Funeral services for the three airmen killed were held 30 May 44 at St-Truiden; their graves are now located in the Heverlee War Cemetery.

Further Information Serial Range NF906 - NG503 This aircraft was one of 400 Lancaster Mk.1s ordered from Armstrong Whitworth aircraft (Baginton) and delivered from Jul 44 to Feb 45, mainly with Merlin 24 engines from Baginton and Bitteswell. NG457 was delivered to No.424 Sqdn Jan 45. Incomplete operational history. Carried the ID's QB-C/H. Lost on its first operation with a maiden crew. NG457 was one of two No.424 Sqdn Lancasters lost on this operation.See: NG346 Airborne 1646 7 Mar 45 from Skipton-on-Swale.Crashed at Dabringhausen, a town E of the Rhine and some 14 km ENE of Leverkusen. F/O Lawrence is believed to have baled out safely, but he is buried with his comrades in Rheinberg War Cemetery. At 19, F/O Robinson was one of the youngest Canadian Navigators killed on Bomber operations. His Skipper had flown two sorties as second pilot and he was killed while taking his own crew on their operational debut.

Further Information Serial Range LW157 - LW179. 23 Halifax Mk.111. Delivered by Handley Page (Cricklewood & Radlett) between 9 May 44 and 23 May 44. LW164 was the last Halifax 111 to be lost by 424 Sqdn, now about to be converted to the Lancaster. It had completed sixty-seven operations when lost.

Airborne 1921 28 Jan 45 from Skipton-on-Swale but swung out of control when barely airborne, crashed and exploded, the blast throwing F/O Tremblay clear of the flames. Critically injured, he was rushed to RAF Hospital Northallerton. Those killed are buried in Harrogate (Stonefall) Cemetery. W/C Williams was a Regular officer; along with his two Air Gunners he was engaged on his second tour of operations.

Further Information Serial Range MZ787 - MZ831. 45 Halifax Mk.111. Part of a batch of 360 HP61 Halifax Mk.B.111. Delivered by English Electric Co. (Salmesbury & Preston) between 23 Jun 44 and 14 Jul 44. MZ822 was one of two 424 Sqdn Halifaxes lost on this operation. See: LW131.

Airborne 1612 2 Nov 44 from Skipton-on-Swale. Bombed the AP at 1929 from

20,000 feet, reducing height soon after to 16,000 feet. At 1938 the Halifax was struck by Flak which severely damaged the port rudder and elevators and started a fire behind the

port outer bulkhead. As ordered, six baled out over Allied held territory, but then the blaze died down and with the aid of his landing-lights F/O King force-landed in a ploughed field near Grandlup-et-Fay (Aisne), 14 km NE of Laon. F/O Harris RCAF was treated at the 98th American General Hospital. Most of the crew were home within a week and F/O Harris was not badly injured.

Further Information Serial Range NN694 - NN816 This aircraft was one of 100 Lancaster Mk.1s ordered from Austin Motors (Longbridge) and delivered from Mar 44 to Feb 45 with Merlin 24 engines except for the last ten (NN806-816) with Merlin 22 engines. NN777 was delivered to 424 Sqdn 5 Jan 45. No operational history.

Airborne 1633 14 Mar 45 from Skipton-on-Swale to block the town in order to deny the Wehrmacht communication to the forward areas. Attacked the target successfully at 2016 from 13,000 feet but on regaining the Yorkshire coast ran short of fuel. On entering the circuit at Dishforth, the Lancaster began to turn to port and lose height. Unable to resume level flight, P/O McInroy crash-landed 2345 with two crew members sustaining minor injuries.

Further Information Serial Range MZ787 - MZ831. 45 Halifax Mk.111. Delivered by English Electric Co. (Salmesbury & Preston) between 23 Jun 44 and 14 Jul 44. MZ802 was initially issued to No.431 Sqdn. Named 'Gallopin Gerty'. The nose-art depicted a spectacular galloping elephant motif. There is a photograph of this art also depicting 31 mission markers and claiming three enemy aircraft shot down. This art-work was transferred after the loss of MZ802, to Halifax NR206 of No.415 Sqdn (6U-F) and re-named 'Fi-Fi'. This time the elephant survived the war to be scrapped in 1945.

Further Information Serial Range ME295 - ME551 This aircraft was one of 200 Lancasters ordered from A.V.Roe (Yeadon) May 42 . M456 was a Mk.1 and was delivered to No.424 Sqdn 17 Jan.45 complete operational history. However it appears ME456 was lost on its first Key Operation. No record of total hours.

Airborne 2136 20 Feb 45 from Skipton-on-Swale. Hit by Flak while running towards the AP and not long afterwards a night-fighter struck. As a result, the two starboard engines failed as did the hydraulic system. The Allied lines were regained where five of the crew managed to bale out, but two drifted back into German held territory. A brilliant forced-landing was effected, for which F/S Cozens was awarded the DFM, Gazetted 18 Mar. 45.

Airborne 2118 10 Apr 43 from Topcliffe. Outbound, developed severe engine problems and the order to bale out was given. Only Sgt Lees was able to comply, doing so from 600 feet, before the Wellington crashed 0058 near Rolvenden, 15 miles SSE of Maidstone, Kent and burst into flames. Sgt Lees came down so close to the burning wreckage that he made several valiant efforts to reach his trapped comrades, but each time he was beaten back by the flames and extreme heat. This had been his second narrow escape by parachute in less than three months. See: BK436. Sgt Buie had been his pilot on that occasion, and F/S Taylor his W/Op.
